Paul McCarthy studied experimental painting and performance at the University of Utah (1968), and later obtained a multidisciplinary master’s degree in arts and film production from the University of Southern California (USA). In his early career, he sought to rupture with the limitations of painting by using the body and unconventional materials, such as body fluids and food.

Taking elements from the universe of the North American entertainment industry, McCarthy’s production gathers performances recorded in video and photo, as well as large-scale sculptures and installations. Criticizing art and consumerism, and often containing obscene implications, his works usually make the audience uncomfortable. Between 2000 and 2001, a retrospective exhibition of his traveled around the United States (Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles, and New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York); Villa Arson (France); and Tate Liverpool (England).
