DEATH NOTICE

Brumadinho, MG – It is with great sadness that the Inhotim Institute announces the death, early this Friday, January 13, of the landscaper and artist Pedro Nehring (1955–2023), one of the creators of the landscaping project of Inhotim’s Botanical Garden. Known nationally and internationally as a reference in contemporary tropical landscaping, Pedro Nehring was a central character in the making of Inhotim’s botanical collection, one of the most expressive in the world, and in the creation of landscapes that delight thousands of people who visit the Institute every year.

Self-taught, Pedro Henrique Nehring Cesar was born in Teresópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, on May 25, 1955, into a family of landscapers: his brother and father also practiced the craft. Inhotim’s Botanical Garden is constantly expanding, and Nehring’s last work – the Jardim Sombra e Água Fresca – is the result of a creative process that spanned nearly ten years. Built on a former pasture area measuring 32,000 square meters, the largest themed garden at Inhotim is filled with elements that symbolize the work of Pedro Nehring: landscapes full of history permeated by moments of rest and enjoyment, fruit trees, in addition to a potent vocation for environmental education.

Complex and diverse, another garden envisioned by Pedro Nehring is the Jardim Veredas, a reflection of Nehring’s practical development – he claimed that one had to go into the woods to fully grasp landscaping. Balancing formal rigor and the impermanence of nature, Pedro sought to understand and, above all, reflect the cycles of the year in the materialization of his projects. The Jardim Veredas, and all its projects at Inhotim, are the result of periodic observations, unique understanding of plant cycles and perception of nature’s own time.

This Thursday, January 12, Pedro Nehring was at Viveiro Educador, the heart of the Botanical Garden, in a meeting about the upcoming work at Inhotim in areas that will be open to the public in the future. He was relaxed, he said goodbye to the teams with joy.

A wake will be held this Friday, January 13, starting 12:30 pm at the Parque da Colina cemetery, in the Nova Cintra neighborhood, in Belo Horizonte. The funeral is scheduled for 4:30 pm. All of Inhotim Institute’s staff wish to express their condolences to Pedro Nehring’s family, and thank him for all his lessons and for the years they worked together. His legacy will forever remain in the beauty of the

landscapes of Inhotim’s Botanical Garden, which will always be lovingly cared for by everyone at the institution.
